How to check Irish driving and identity documents: the official routes

Short answer: Ireland has no public lookup that lets a stranger confirm someone's driving licence. Checks are the holder's own: a free NDLS driver statement, a penalty point query, MyRoadSafety, MyEDT and the application status tool. The theory test, passport and Safe Pass each have one official route, and a seller can reproduce none of them.

This page lists the checks we have documented, who can use each one and the guide that explains it. Where we found no public check, we say so. Details were checked on 5 October 2026.

Key facts
  • NDLS sends a driver statement or penalty point answer only to the holder's email address, or the postal address linked to the record. It does not release it to a third party.
  • The theory test has one official booking site, theorytest.ie, and the RSA calls unofficial booking sites fraudulent.
  • NDLS has no official social media pages, according to a 2020 Garda and RSA warning.
  • The Passport Service says it never contacts applicants through automated calls.

What there is no check for

We did not find, on the NDLS, RSA or SOLAS pages we read, a public service that lets an employer, a buyer or a landlord confirm a stranger's licence, permit or Safe Pass card online. Information goes to the person it belongs to. That has a practical consequence: anyone who sends you a "proof" that a licence is registered, whether a screenshot, a number or a link, has given you nothing that the licensing service itself would stand behind.

A habit that works for every document

  1. Start at the official address, typed or bookmarked, never from a message.
  2. Run the check yourself rather than accepting a screenshot of a result.
  3. Compare the price with the official fee table on NDLS or the RSA.
  4. If anything disagrees with the record, ask the issuer, not the person who gave you the document.

A rule that holds

A genuine record is created by the issuing body after its own process: a theory test sat by you, a permit issued by NDLS, a Safe Pass entry uploaded by an approved tutor. A seller cannot create one, and no check will ever confirm a document that was not issued that way. See scam red flags and where to report.

Documents you show, and documents you verify

For the theory test you present ID, and the RSA accepts only specific documents in hard copy. For a licence application you do not present anything in person if you apply online: your Public Services Card and verified MyGovID do that work. That difference matters when a stranger asks you to send photographs of your documents. The official services use your card and your verified account, not pictures sent over chat.

When no check is possible

For birth, marriage and criminal-record certificates, professional qualifications and language tests we have not documented an Irish check, and we say so rather than guess. If you are an employer, ask the issuing body directly.

Frequently asked questions

Can I check someone else's Irish driving licence online?

We did not find a public NDLS service for that. NDLS says driver statement and penalty point information goes only to the holder, and is not released to a third party.

How do I check my own driving licence record?

Use the free NDLS driver statement form, or the Penalty Point Query on the NDLS contact form. Both are sent to your email or the postal address on your record.

How do I know a theory test site is official?

The RSA says to book only on the official site, theorytest.ie, and that unofficial websites accepting bookings are fraudulent.

Can I check a Safe Pass card online?

We did not find an official card checker on the SOLAS page we read. You can check that your tutor is on the SOLAS Safe Pass Accredited Tutors register.

What if a seller sends me a screenshot proving the licence is real?

A screenshot proves nothing. Licences come from the NDLS record, and NDLS releases information only to the holder.
