Scam warning

NDLS look-alike websites and pages: how to reach the real service

Short answer: The National Driver Licence Service has no official social media pages, Gardaí and the RSA said in a 2020 warning about a fake NDLS Facebook page that asked for over €200 over WhatsApp. Reach NDLS through ndls.ie or rsa.ie, and apply only with a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID.

Key facts
  • "ndls" is the most searched term in our Irish data: about 40,500 searches a month in Google Ads data for Ireland (5 October 2026). Anything popular attracts imitators.
  • Gardaí quoted the RSA in April 2020: the only way to contact NDLS is through the official RSA social media pages, or online through rsa.ie or ndls.ie.
  • Applying online on the real service needs a Public Services Card and a verified MyGovID account.
  • First licence or renewal costs €65; replacement €35 (checked 5 October 2026).

What happened in 2020

In April 2020 gardaí, working with the RSA, warned of a Facebook page that presented itself as NDLS. It invited people to contact it on WhatsApp to apply for or renew a driving licence, then asked for over €200. The page was reported to Facebook for removal and gardaí said an investigation was under way. Anyone who thought they were a victim was asked to contact their local Garda station.

The search results for "buy irish driving licence" on 5 October 2026 still included Facebook pages with NDLS in their names beside the genuine NDLS pages. We cannot say whether any of them is active or who runs it, and we do not link to them. The 2020 warning is the verified part.

If you reach a page you are not sure about

  1. Close it and open ndls.ie yourself. If the same service is there, use that one.
  2. Do not send documents or pay to find out whether it is real.
  3. If the page asked for money or documents, treat it as a scam and read what to do if you paid.
  4. Report it to the platform and to your local Garda station.

The same warning applies to the theory test: the RSA says unofficial sites that appear to accept bookings are fraudulent, and to the passport service, which has its own alert on passport application sites.

Platform reporting

The CCPC points out that if a scam reached you through an online ad or marketplace you can report it directly to the platform, and that the EU Digital Services Act gives you rights where an online platform or advertisement is involved. It also advises contacting your bank or card provider as soon as possible and asking about a chargeback.

Free services NDLS does not charge for

A quick test: some NDLS services have no fee, so a page that charges for them is not NDLS. Updating personal details on a licence or learner permit costs nothing. A driver statement is free. A first or renewal application is free if you are 70 or over. A one-year medical licence is €0. Replacement fees apply to everyone, including people over 70, at €35.

What happens at a real centre

NDLS has 34 centres. You book an appointment, then bring the items listed for your application: your Public Services Number, photo ID, address proof if needed, any medical form, and the fee. You can pay by card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or a Payzone voucher. Nobody at a centre will ask for cash, a cheque or a postal order, because NDLS does not accept them.

Frequently asked questions

Does NDLS have a Facebook page?

No. Gardaí and the RSA said in 2020 that NDLS has no official social media pages. The only ways to contact it are the official RSA social media pages, rsa.ie and ndls.ie.

Is ndls.rsa.ie genuine?

Yes. The Apply Online button on ndls.ie links to ndls.rsa.ie. Reach it from ndls.ie rather than from a message.

Does NDLS contact people on WhatsApp?

We found no official WhatsApp service on the NDLS or RSA pages we read. The 2020 warning described a fake page that moved people to WhatsApp.

What does NDLS charge to renew a licence?

€65 for a first-time or renewal application, free if you are 70 or over, checked on 5 October 2026. A replacement licence is €35 for everyone.

How do I check my application status?

Use the application status tool on ndls.ie, which links to appstatus.rsa.ie. NDLS says an exchange can take up to three months.

I paid a page that said it was NDLS. What now?

Ring your bank at once on the number on your card, gather screenshots, and report it to your local Garda station. Our paid-a-scammer page gives the sequence.
