Australia has no single driver licence. Each state and territory issues its own, each has its own tests and fees, and each has its own website. That patchwork is part of why look-alike sites and fake offers do well here: people are unsure which agency is the right one, and a confident-looking page fills the gap. These guides name the right agency for each document, explain the scams that sit around it, and show where to report one.
Start with the question you have
The straight answer, the law, and what the lawful route involves in each state.
The official agency and web address for all eight states and territories.
Look-alike sites that charge for something the Passport Office does directly.
Why third-party sites cost more, and the registry you should use instead.
Fake cards, hastily built training sites and how to check a provider.
What to do in the first hour, in what order.

Check a document the official way
A card can look right and still be worthless, because the record behind it is what counts. Our official checks table lists the route for each document we cover, including the Ahpra register for health practitioners and the training-provider check for white cards.
Get the real thing
For licences, getting a driver licence step by step follows the stages each state publishes. For passports, the passport fee and timing page uses the Passport Office’s own table, checked on 5 October 2026.
If something has already gone wrong
Contact your bank first, then IDCARE on 1800 595 160, then report the scam. The order and the reasons are in what to do if you paid a scammer, and the reporting routes are in how to report a scam.
Who we are
We are not a government body. We do not name or link to scam websites; we describe how they work. Read the about page and the editorial policy.
How we know what we know
Every guide on this site was written from pages we opened on the date shown on it: state and territory agencies, registries, the Passport Office, regulators, the Criminal Code and Scamwatch. Where we could not open something we say so on the sources page, and the case log lists each documented warning or prosecution we rely on with its date and outcome.
Frequently asked questions
Is Truthdocuments a government website?
No. Truthdocuments is an independent information site. For official services use the .gov.au address of the state, territory or Commonwealth agency that issues the document.
Do you sell or arrange driver licences or certificates?
No. We do not sell, issue, arrange or broker any licence, certificate, card or other document. Anyone who says we do is impersonating us.
Can I report a scam website to you?
You can tell us through the contact page, but the report that counts goes to Scamwatch and, if you lost money or identity details, to your bank and IDCARE.
