Each flag below is matched to an official fact, so you can test an offer against the real process rather than against a feeling.
- Fees: €45 theory test, €45 first learner permit, €85 car driving test, €65 first licence, €35 replacement.
- Online applications need a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID.
- NDLS has no official social media pages.
- Theory tests need one approved hard-copy ID and are booked at theorytest.ie.
The flags and the facts
| Red flag | What the official process says |
|---|---|
| You are asked to message on WhatsApp or Facebook to apply or renew | Gardaí and the RSA warned in 2020 that NDLS has no official social media pages, after a fake page asked for over €200. |
| The price is several hundred euro or more | NDLS charges €65 for a first licence or renewal and €35 for a replacement. |
| "No test needed" or "we sit it for you" | The theory test needs approved ID and a security check. Impersonators were paid €1,000 to €2,500, and the permits they produced were revoked. |
| An offer to get you a driving test slot faster | The RSA says its agents have no cancellation list and cannot prioritise appointments. |
| A site that "books" your theory test | The RSA says unofficial sites that appear to accept bookings are fraudulent. The official site is theorytest.ie. |
| A fee for "helping" with your passport form | The Passport Service says such sites are not associated with it. |
| A recorded call about your passport | The Passport Service says it will never contact you this way. |
| A request for photos of your passport, PSC or licence | An online application needs your Public Services Card and verified MyGovID, not photos sent by chat. |
| Payment by transfer, voucher or crypto | NDLS takes card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or Payzone vouchers in person. Cash, cheques and postal orders are refused. |
| A Safe Pass card without a course | The card is issued after an approved tutor uploads your results. |
Flags from the law
If you are asked to take delivery of something described as a "copy" or an "authentic" card, remember that the 2001 Act treats a false instrument and its copies as separate offences (sections 25 to 29). Having one can itself be an offence, whatever the seller says. See the law page.
Weaker signals
- Pressure to pay today.
- A website with no postal address, or one that does not match the phone number's country.
If you spotted one
Close the page, open the official address yourself, and report the offer. See where to report, and if you have paid, what to do now.
Red flags by stage of the licensing route
| Stage | Official anchor | Flag |
|---|---|---|
| Theory test | €45, theorytest.ie, your own ID | Someone offers to sit it, or a site "books" it for a fee |
| Learner permit | €45, NDLS, PSC and MyGovID | A permit offered without a theory pass |
| Lessons | 12 EDT sessions with an ADI, tracked in MyEDT | Sessions "signed off" without lessons |
| Driving test | €85, MyRoadSafety, invitation queue | A faster slot for a fee |
| Licence | €65, NDLS, application after the pass | A card without a test, or paid through chat |
| Renewal or replacement | €65 or €35, NDLS | A WhatsApp or Facebook "service" |
Two questions that settle most cases
- Could I do this myself on the official site for the official fee?
- Is the seller asking for something the official process never asks for: a photo of my card, a transfer, a step skipped?
If the answer to the first is yes and the second is also yes, you have your answer.
Adding up the real fees
The four fixed fees on the route to a first licence, €45 for the theory test, €45 for the permit, €85 for a car test and €65 for the licence, come to €240, before lessons. A seller who quotes one figure for "everything" is quoting a price for a bundle the State never sells. The reported impersonation fees, €1,000 to €2,500 for a single theory test, were many times the official fee for the same step.
Frequently asked questions
How can I tell a fake NDLS page?
NDLS has no official social media pages and applications use ndls.ie with a Public Services Card and verified MyGovID. A page that asks you to message on WhatsApp is not NDLS.
What is a normal price for an Irish driving licence?
€65 for a first licence or renewal on NDLS, €35 for a replacement, checked 5 October 2026. Tests and the permit are extra.
Is a licence delivered in days a red flag?
Yes. The official route includes a theory test, a six-month wait for first-time permit holders, a driving test and an application after the pass.
Can anyone speed up my driving test?
The RSA says its agents have no cancellation list and cannot prioritise appointments. Bookings are self-managed on MyRoadSafety.
Do real services ask for payment by transfer?
NDLS takes card, Google Pay, Apple Pay or Payzone vouchers at centres and cards online, and refuses cash, cheques and postal orders.
