How to check what is real in New Zealand: the official route for each document

Short answer: Driver licence details can be checked by any licensing agent or police officer, never by looking at the card. Use govt.nz and passports.govt.nz for passports and certificates, and call NZTA on 0800 822 422 to confirm a letter or message. No public online check of a birth certificate was found.

The table lists the checks we have confirmed from official or agency pages, who can use each and its limits. Where we could not confirm a check, we say so. Details checked on 5 October 2026.

Key facts
  • The AA states licence details can easily be checked by any licensing agent or police officer.
  • The AA and VTNZ are the only two driver licensing agents contracted by NZTA.
  • NZTA’s driver licensing helpline is 0800 822 422.
  • For passports the official site is passports.govt.nz; other services are on govt.nz (DIA, via RNZ).

We have not confirmed whether NZTA offers a verification service for employers or hire companies, because its pages block automated access. If you need to verify an employee’s licence, ask NZTA directly on 0800 822 422.

Pick your situation

  • You are about to pay someone for licensing help: do not. Walk into an AA or VTNZ agent or use NZTA’s site.
  • You got a text or email about a licence or registration: do not click. Call NZTA, and report the message to Netsafe; see where to report.
  • You are renewing a passport: start from govt.nz and compare the fee to $247 or $144.
  • You are an employer: ask for the licence in person and ask NZTA about verification.

A short routine before you pay

  1. Start from an official address you typed yourself, never from a message.
  2. Compare the fee with the official figure.
  3. Ask whether the process requires you to be present, as NZ licensing does.
  4. When a document and the official position disagree, go back to the agency, never to whoever handed you the paper.

The principle behind every check here

Real records come from the issuing agency at the end of its own process. A seller has no way to “register” a licence, so no official check can ever confirm one that a seller says they produced. The AA puts it plainly: a fraudulent licence is the same as having no licence at all.

Checking a website

For government services, DIA’s advice is to use official websites on govt.nz. IDCARE adds, in its fact sheet on travel visa scams, that you should reach official application sites through the government’s own pages, and that most official visa sites of other countries end in .gov or .go. For New Zealand the pattern is govt.nz, with nzta.govt.nz for licensing and passports.govt.nz for passports. Type the address yourself. An advert, a social media link or a message is not a safe way in, because look-alike sites buy the same search terms people use.

If you are new to New Zealand

The AA says people who have recently arrived and are unsure where to find accurate information are among those targeted. Two points help. First, NZTA’s theory tests are available in Arabic, Chinese, Filipino, Gujarati, Hindi, Fijian, Korean, te reo Māori, Punjabi, Samoan, Thai and Tongan, so you do not need an intermediary for language. Second, every licensing step that matters happens at an agent in person, so any offer to do it remotely is not what it claims.

Common questions

How do I check if an NZ driver licence is real?

The AA says any licensing agent or police officer can easily check licence details. A visual check of the card is not enough.

How do I know a licensing agent is genuine?

Only the AA and VTNZ are contracted by NZTA. Use the agent finder on NZTA’s site or the AA and VTNZ sites, and visit in person.

How do I check a letter or text claiming to be from NZTA?

Call NZTA on 0800 822 422, using the number from govt.nz and not one in the message, and do not click links.

Can I check a birth certificate online?

We found no public online check. Ask the agency that asked for it or DIA.

What is the official NZ passport website?

passports.govt.nz, named by DIA, with other services on govt.nz.
