Official sources behind the New Zealand guides

Short answer: The New Zealand guides rest on NZTA’s July 2026 overseas licence factsheet, govt.nz, AA guidance, Crimes Act and Land Transport Act reprints, DIA statements, Netsafe and NZ Police pages, and reporting by RNZ, 1News and the NZ Herald. NZTA, legislation.govt.nz and passports.govt.nz blocked our access.

Agencies and official guidance

Industry and legal sources

  • AA pages on scams, fact check, learner, restricted, full licences, renewals and conversions.
  • Crimes Act 1961, reprint as at 11 May 2014; Land Transport Act 1998, reprint as at 1 December 2020. Current versions are on legislation.govt.nz.

News and cases

  • RNZ, 1News and NZ Herald on the 440 revoked commercial licences (November 2025).
  • 1News on testing officers (July 2026), the driver licensing probe (September 2026) and licence fee changes (February 2026).
  • NZ Herald on the 2018 bribery case and the 2009 student licence case; Driven Car Guide on penalties.
  • RNZ (30 January 2025) and the NZ Law Society (19 June 2019) on DIA warnings about third-party sites.

What we could not open

  • nzta.govt.nz web pages block automated access. Only NZTA’s PDF factsheet downloaded. The learner and restricted fee figures are therefore reported, and the NZTA media release and example scams page were not read.
  • legislation.govt.nz issues a bot challenge, so statutes were read from reprints.
  • passports.govt.nz is blocked; passport facts are from govt.nz.
  • The Stuff report on unofficial passport sites was not readable, so we use none of its figures.
