Fees at a glance
| Part | What it covers | Fee |
|---|---|---|
| 1a | Multiple-choice questions | £26 |
| 1b | Hazard perception | £11 |
| 2 | Case studies | £23 |
| All three | £60 |
The case study part is a feature of the lorry and bus route and has no equivalent in the car test. We did not find lorry pass marks or question counts on the GOV.UK pages we read, so check the current page before you revise; the car pass marks of 43 out of 50 and 44 out of 75 do not apply.

What the sellers promise
Adverts for lorry licences or theory passes with 'no tests required' are the same pitch Which? found on Facebook and Instagram, where DVLA said such adverts were not connected to it and were recognised scams. A pass that was never earned will not match DVSA's record. A training provider or employer who checks will find nothing, and the person who paid has lost both money and the personal details they sent. See buying an HGV licence and fake theory test certificates.
How a pass is evidenced
For the car test, GOV.UK says you get the result at the test centre, with a letter showing a pass certificate number valid for two years. We did not read the equivalent wording for lorry and bus tests, so we do not assume the same period. What does not change is the principle: the pass is a record held by DVSA, and a paper certificate from a stranger is not that record. The car rule is explained on how long a theory pass lasts.
After the theory
- Book the practical test using only the official service.
- Plan the Driver CPC tests; GOV.UK describes five that make up the full qualification. See the 35 hours.
- Add up the costs on HGV licence cost.
- Keep every confirmation email until you hold the entitlement.
Frequently asked questions
How much is the HGV theory test?
£26 for part 1a, £11 for part 1b and £23 for part 2, according to GOV.UK (checked 5 October 2026). If you sit all three, the total is £60.
What do I need to book?
GOV.UK says your UK driving licence number, an email address and a credit or debit card. You also need to have lived in England, Wales or Scotland for at least 185 days in the last 12 months.
Can a theory pass certificate be bought?
No. The pass is recorded by DVSA. A seller offering one without a test is selling a fake that fails checks against that record, as adverts without tests failed Which?'s scrutiny.
What are the three parts?
Part 1a is multiple choice, part 1b is hazard perception and part 2 is case studies. Each is paid for separately, so a part you need to retake means paying that part's fee again.
Who can I contact about the booking?
GOV.UK gives DVSA theory test customer services on 0300 200 1122, Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm. Use it for booking problems rather than a middleman who charges extra.
