How a genuine booking unfolds
- Check you need the test and are not exempt (see below).
- Go to the Life in the UK Test page on GOV.UK yourself and start the booking from there.
- Enter your name exactly as it appears on the ID you will bring.
- Ask for any disability adjustments at the booking stage.
- Pay £50. Do not pay a service charge on top.
- Take your ID to the centre.
Accepted ID
A valid passport, an ID card from the EU, Switzerland, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway, a valid photo travel document (not emergency documents), a biometric residence permit or card, or an eVisa with a share code from your UKVI account. A BRP or BRC must be within 24 months of expiry, or dated before 31 December 2026. The name on your booking must exactly match the ID. A missing middle name or a swapped order can cost you the fee. For share codes, see UK eVisa share codes.
Official booking versus a look-alike
| GOV.UK service | Look-alike or reseller | |
|---|---|---|
| Address | gov.uk | Another domain, often reached by an advert |
| Fee | £50 | Higher, or a fee that appears at the end |
| Promises | A test slot | A guaranteed pass, a guaranteed date, a study pack |
Who does not need to sit it
People under 18, people aged 65 or over, people who passed before, and people with a long-term physical or mental condition who have an exemption form or doctor's letter. The test is needed for citizenship or settlement: see who needs the test. Pass-mark details are on the pass mark page.
Special circumstances and help
If you have changed gender and want the booking handled sensitively, GOV.UK says to email sensitivebookings@homeoffice.gov.uk before booking. The helpline is support@lituk.psionline.com or 0800 015 4245, Monday to Friday, 8am to 8pm.
The official-site rule
GOV.UK states it is the only official government service for booking the test. Any other site that takes a booking is a look-alike or a reseller: see unofficial booking sites.
