Scam warning

Fake IELTS certificates: why buying a result goes wrong

Short answer: Adverts on social media offer IELTS results without sitting the exam. IDP, an IELTS partner, says scammers take the money and disappear. A buyer who does receive something risks a fraud offence, a refused application and a malpractice ban. The lawful route is a real test at an approved centre.

Key facts
  • IDP says scam adverts run on Google, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Reddit and Quora.
  • Fake test report forms, fake certificates and fake test centres are all in use.
  • Reports go to security.ielts@idp.com or the form at ielts.org/about-ielts/test-security.
  • Fraud by false representation carries up to ten years on indictment.

What the adverts say

IDP's scam page describes adverts on Google, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter/X, WhatsApp, LinkedIn, Reddit and Quora, plus various websites and blogs, under headlines such as “Buy IELTS without giving exam”. IDP lists fake test report forms, counterfeit certificates, fake test centres and fraudulent exam content as the main variants. Some sellers say they can place a result in the online verification system. That is the most persuasive claim and the least believable.

How it unfolds

  1. An advert on a social platform or website promises a result without an exam.
  2. The buyer pays, and in a real transaction would have to hand over personal details for the seller to produce anything.
  3. Per IDP, the scammers take the money and disappear.
  4. If a document does arrive, it is a fake test report form or certificate. IDP says institutions reject these.
  5. The buyer may be reported to authorities and banned from IELTS.

IDP's own account of the outcome is blunt: the scammers take the money and disappear. The buyer has no refund route, and the seller now holds the buyer's passport details. We found no Which? or police alert aimed at fake IELTS specifically, so we do not claim a number of victims, and we do not quote seller prices because the only figures we found were on third-party blogs.

What a seller promises, and what the real process is

Seller saysThe real process
No exam neededYou sit the test at an approved centre; for a visa it must be an approved SELT
Result will be in the systemOrganisations look up a result by Test Report Form number; the record comes from a real test

Consequences

TypeWhat can follow
LegalUsing a false result can be fraud. Section 2 of the Fraud Act 2006 covers dishonest false representations, and the maximum on indictment is ten years (a ceiling, not a typical sentence). Making or supplying a false document can fall under the Forgery and Counterfeiting Act 1981.

Immigration consequences are separate and can be serious. Check current Home Office guidance on false documents before submitting anything you are unsure about, and see consequences of using a false English test result.

If you were contacted or already paid

  1. Stop paying, and do not send further ID.
  2. Keep screenshots of the advert, the account and the payments.
  3. Tell your bank or card provider straight away.
  4. Report the seller to IELTS at security.ielts@idp.com or the test-security form on ielts.org.
  5. Report to the police fraud reporting service. If you sent a passport scan, watch for identity misuse.

The lawful route

For a visa, you generally need an approved test: see approved SELT tests and IELTS for UKVI. Book through the official booking page IDP links from its scam guidance. A genuine result can be checked by the organisation that receives it: how IELTS results are verified. Accounts that pose as staff are covered in IELTS impersonation scams.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy an IELTS result without taking the test?

Adverts claim so, but IDP says scammers take the money and disappear. A purchased result is a fraud risk, not a shortcut, and institutions reject it.

Can a fake IELTS result be uploaded to the verification system?

Fraudsters claim they can. Organisations look up results by Test Report Form number against the real record, so a result that came from no test has nothing to match.

What is the penalty for using a false document?

Under the Fraud Act 2006, section 1(3), fraud carries up to ten years on indictment. That is a maximum, not a typical sentence. See our law page.

How do I report an IELTS scam?

Email security.ielts@idp.com, use the online form at ielts.org/about-ielts/test-security, or tell your nearest IELTS test centre.

Where do I book a genuine IELTS test?

IDP points to its official booking page at bxsearch.ielts.idp.com. For a UK visa, book an IELTS for UKVI test through the IELTS SELT Consortium.

Will I be banned from IELTS if I buy a result?

IDP says buyers face potential bans from IELTS and the risk of being reported to authorities.
