How to replace a lost Driver CPC card

Short answer: A replacement Driver CPC card costs £25 on GOV.UK. You can apply online with your driving licence number or by phoning DVSA on 0300 123 7721. Driving professionally without a card can bring a £50 fixed penalty. Do not pay a third-party site; it is not the DVSA service.

Step by step

  1. Find your driving licence number. The replacement is tied to the licence, not to a separate card number.
  2. Pay the £25 on GOV.UK, or phone DVSA on 0300 123 7721.
  3. Save the confirmation email, or write the reference number down. Keep it with you whenever you drive for work.
  4. Wait for the card, which is posted to the address on your driving licence.
  5. Chase DVSA if nothing has come 20 days after payment.

Where replacements go wrong

The card goes to the address held on your driving licence, so a house move you never told DVLA about is the usual reason it vanishes. GOV.UK adds that a further £25 can be charged if a missing card is reported after more than 3 months or was sent to an out-of-date address. Update the licence address first if it is wrong.

The card also carries the date your next block of training is due. GOV.UK says the deadline is shown on the card, and if you hold both lorry and bus entitlements the card may show two, in which case the earlier one governs. Without the card you lose sight of that date, so use the online service for checking your periodic training hours to see where you stand.

Two different penalties

SituationConsequence on GOV.UK
Qualified, but driving professionally without the card on you£50 fixed penalty
Driving professionally without a valid Driver CPC at allA fine of up to £1,000

Losing a card is the first kind of problem and is cheap to fix. The second is a qualification problem, and a replacement card cannot cure it. If your deadline has passed, GOV.UK's route is training or, once only for drivers with acquired rights, the part 2 and part 4 tests, booked on 0300 200 1122.

Cards from other sellers

The card is issued by DVSA only after 35 hours of periodic training or a Return to Driving CPC course. If training was finished more than a year before the deadline, GOV.UK says the card is issued nearer to the expiry date. Anything sold outside that process is a counterfeit, and an operator who accepts it carries the responsibility described on what operators must check. A third-party website charging more than £25 is not the DVSA service.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a replacement Driver CPC card?

£25 on GOV.UK, whether you apply online or by phone (checked 5 October 2026). A website asking for more is not the official service.

Can I keep driving for work while I wait?

Yes, once you have paid. Online applicants carry the payment confirmation email; phone applicants keep the payment reference number. Keep whichever you have with you while driving professionally.

What if the replacement does not arrive?

Contact DVSA if it has not come within 20 days of payment, on 0300 123 7721 (Monday to Friday, 8am to 5pm) or cpcre@dvsa.gov.uk. Check the licence address first, because that is where the card was posted.

Is the £50 penalty the same as the £1,000 fine?

No. GOV.UK describes a £50 fixed penalty for driving professionally without your card, and a fine of up to £1,000 for driving professionally without Driver CPC. The first is about the card, the second about the qualification.

When is the next training deadline?

It is printed on the card, according to GOV.UK. If the card is lost, the online periodic training hours checker shows what you have logged in the current five-year cycle.
