How long it takes
The Passport Office’s processing page gives a headline figure: above 97% of travel documents available within 6 weeks, as at August 2026. The six weeks begin when you lodge and pay, and “available” means the document has been delivered (or delivery attempted) or you have been told it is ready for collection. Complex applications, such as child applications without full parental consent, are not included and can take longer. For urgent travel, two faster options exist for an extra fee: Priority (2-day) and Fast Track (5-day), both for eligible customers and requested when you lodge.
Where to pay
At Australia Post you can pay by EFTPOS, MasterCard, Visa, AMEX or cash. Passport offices accept EFTPOS, MasterCard and Visa only; they do not accept cash. When you are overseas you usually pay in local currency, the same amount in Australian dollars, normally by EFTPOS or credit card. None of this involves a transfer to an agent.
Who can renew online
The Passport Office says renewing an adult passport online is the fastest and easiest option. You can renew online if your passport:
- was issued when you were 18 or older;
- shows your current name, date of birth, place of birth and gender;
- has not been lost, stolen or cancelled in the past 5 years;
- expired less than 3 years ago or will expire within 2 years; and
- was issued with at least 2 years validity.
If you do not meet these conditions, you start the application online, print it, and lodge in person at a post office with supporting documents and printed passport photos. The online route asks for your most recent passport, a photo code from a photo provider such as Australia Post or ID Station, a JPEG of your signature and a Visa, Mastercard or American Express card. Your passport details are verified through the Document Verification Service, and if they cannot be verified you are sent to the standard renewal process.
What this means for scam sites
If the page you are on charges more than this table, or asks for payment by any means other than those listed, you are not on the Passport Office’s site. Read how look-alike sites work. If you need a birth certificate to support a first passport, use the registry for the state of birth: order a birth certificate by state.
Working back from your travel date
The Passport Office says to allow at least 6 weeks from lodging, and that the 6 weeks begin when you lodge and pay. If your trip is closer than that, the options are the Priority (2-day, $308) and Fast Track (5-day, $107) services for eligible customers, requested at lodgement. Remember that “available” means delivered, an attempted delivery or advice that the passport is ready to collect, so build in a day or two for the post. For child applications the page warns that applications lodged without full parental consent or a court order take longer and may not be approved, so sort the paperwork before the travel date, not after.
