Instead the exam board issues a certified statement of results, and GOV.UK says you can use it in place of your certificate, for example for a university application. Boards may give you a replacement certificate for other qualifications they offer, so it is worth asking if your paper is not a GCSE or A level.

Which board holds your results

If your results came from

Contact

England, Wales or Northern Ireland, current boards

AQA, CCEA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR or WJEC

Scotland

The Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA)

Joint Matriculation Board, Northern Examining Association, Associated Examining Board and several regional boards

AQA

London boards, such as ULEAC, LEAG, BTEC and LCCI

Pearson Edexcel

Cambridge and Oxford boards, UCLES, SUJB and Midland and West Midlands boards

OCR

The two Northern Ireland councils, NISEC and NISEAC

CCEA

East Anglian Examinations Board

Pearson Edexcel or OCR, as both hold some records

GOV.UK’s list of defunct boards is longer than the examples shown; use it if your board is not named here. If you are unsure, GOV.UK suggests asking your school or college which board held your results.

Working out what to send

Find the year you sat the exams and the subjects. Any old report, UCAS form or school letter helps.

Identify the board, asking the school or college if needed.

Go to the board’s own site and find its page for certificates or statements of results.

Prepare proof of identity, your name at the time of the exams, and your date of birth.

Ask what the fee is and how long it takes before you pay, especially if you have a deadline.

When the statement is enough

A university or college application, as GOV.UK’s own example.

An employer who asks for proof of grades; the board’s statement is certified evidence, not a photocopy.

A later course that needs a GCSE grade, if the organisation accepts the board’s statement. If in doubt, ask them before you order.

The GOV.UK page does not say which organisations accept the statement in every case, so check with the one asking for it.

Why a bought copy goes wrong

Sites that advertise exam certificates for sale, or “replacement” GCSEs, are not exam boards, and cannot issue what the boards issue. A document bought that way is a forgery, and presenting it to an employer or university can be a criminal matter; see UK law on fake documents. The real route is the board’s own statement, which is also the document the recipient expects. Warning signs for paper mills are on diploma mill warning signs. If you need a degree certificate instead, the route is replacing a degree certificate, and employers verify degrees through HEDD.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Can I get a replacement GCSE certificate?

No. GOV.UK says you cannot get a replacement certificate for an O level, CSE, GCSE or A level. Your exam board will send a certified statement of results instead, which you can use in place of the certificate. Boards may give a replacement for other qualifications they offer, so ask if yours is not a GCSE or A level.

</details>
<details>

Which exam boards are there?

In England, Wales and Northern Ireland the five boards are AQA, CCEA, Pearson Edexcel, OCR and WJEC. For Scottish qualifications contact the Scottish Qualifications Authority (SQA). GOV.UK also lists which board holds records for older, defunct boards. GOV.UK also lists which current board holds the records of boards that no longer exist.

</details>
<details>

Do I have to pay?

You may need to prove your identity and pay a fee. GOV.UK does not give an amount, so ask the board for its current fee and timescale before you order, especially if you have a deadline. Ask the fee and the timescale before ordering if you have a deadline.

</details>
<details>

What if I do not know which board marked my exams?

GOV.UK suggests checking with your school or college, who should know which board held your results. Have the year you sat the exams to hand. If the board no longer exists, GOV.UK lists which current board holds its records. GOV.UK adds that you may need to prove your identity when you apply for the statement.

</details>
<details>

Can I use the statement of results for a university application?

Yes. GOV.UK gives a university application as its own example of using a certified statement of results in place of the certificate. For other uses, check with the organisation asking for proof. The statement is certified evidence from the board, not a photocopy of your old certificate.

</details>

Keep reading

Diploma mill warning signs

How employers verify a degree

All qualification scams

Sources and official links

GOV.UK: get a replacement exam certificate

JCQ: Joint Council for Qualifications

About the author
Written by Mark Dent from official GOV.UK guidance, UK legislation and public reporting.
