A long certificate shows parents’ details and occupations; nidirect says it is the one needed for things such as passports and driving licences. A short certificate shows basic details and proves age. Choose long unless you know the other will do.

How to order

Collect the full name, date and place of birth, both parents’ names including the mother’s maiden name, and the mother’s address at the time of birth. nidirect warns that a certificate cannot be sent without full details.

Order online with a debit or credit card, or by phone on 0300 200 7890, or by post using the form to General Register Office, Colby House, Belfast BT9 5RR.

Choose standard or priority.
