The costs are the Driver CPC tests, from £11 to £141 per part, the doctor’s D4 medical, which the doctor sets, and £25 for a replacement card. Anyone charging a fee for a licence without tests is selling a fake.

Last reviewed: 2026-10-05 · By Mark Dent

On this page

The licence itself

The test fees in full

Costs the table does not show

Booking only through the official service

Why a flat-fee licence is a fake

Frequently asked questions

Key facts (GOV.UK, checked 5 October 2026)

There is no application fee for a provisional lorry or bus licence.

Adding up the listed Driver CPC test parts gives £270 on weekdays and £304 in evenings, at weekends and on bank holidays.

A replacement Driver CPC card is £25.

The D4 medical is priced by whoever does it; GOV.UK gives no fixed fee.

The licence itself

You send form D2 and the completed D4 medical report, with your photocard licence, to DVLA. Paper licence holders add a passport-style colour photo and original identity documents. DVLA says to expect the licence within 3 weeks of receiving the application, longer if health or personal details need checking. You must be at least 18, with some exceptions, and you hold the lorry or bus entitlement only while you hold your car licence: GOV.UK says you automatically lose it if you lose the car licence.

The test fees in full

Item

Weekday

Evening, weekend, bank holiday

Part 1 theory, multiple choice

£26

£26

Part 1 theory, hazard perception

£11

£11

Part 2, case studies

£23

£23

Part 3a, off-road exercises

£40

£40

Part 3b, on-road driving

£115

£141

Part 4, practical demonstration

£55

£63

Replacement Driver CPC card

£25

£25

The totals above are our own addition of the six test rows, one pass at each, and leave out the medical, any lessons, vehicle hire and a retest. GOV.UK also lists £25 for a Driver CPC card for non-UK licence holders and for an NVT concession card, and says part 3a can be taken with an approved provider for up to £40.

Costs the table does not show

The medical. Paid to the doctor, optician or private firm. See the D4 medical.

Training. Every driver then needs 35 hours of periodic training every 5 years. GOV.UK gives no course price.

Renewal. The overview says the lorry or bus licence is renewed every 5 years, and every year once you are 65.

Booking only through the official service

GOV.UK’s own warning is that you may be charged more if you book through an unofficial website. Compare any price you are quoted with the table: if a test part costs more than the figure above, you are paying a middleman. People training under an approved National Vocational Training course may drive professionally for up to 12 months without parts 2 and 4, which is a lawful concession, not a shortcut around testing.

Why a flat-fee licence is a fake

Every lawful route has at least four separate stages: the medical, the provisional licence, the Driver CPC tests, and the card. A "registered HGV licence" sold for one price skips all of them. The real total is a set of small official fees plus whatever your doctor and trainer charge, and none of it is paid to a person who promises a result. See buying an HGV licence.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

How much is a provisional HGV licence?

There is no application fee, according to GOV.UK (checked 5 October 2026). You pay for the medical, the Driver CPC tests and any training separately.

</details>
<details>

What do the Driver CPC tests cost in total?

Adding GOV.UK’s six test rows gives £270 on a weekday and £304 for evening, weekend and bank holiday slots, for one attempt at each part. Retakes cost the part fee again.

</details>
<details>

Who sets the price of the medical?

The doctor, optician or private firm that carries it out. GOV.UK says they can charge you and gives no fixed price, so ask for the fee before you book.

</details>
<details>

Can I drive professionally before finishing all the tests?

Only in the narrow case GOV.UK describes: approved NVT courses allow up to 12 months of professional driving without parts 2 and 4. It is not a way to skip them.

</details>
<details>

What happens to my HGV licence if I lose my car licence?

GOV.UK says you automatically lose your HGV or bus licence.

</details>

Keep reading

The HGV medical

Lost Driver CPC card

Fake driving licences

The HGV theory test

Buying an HGV licence

Sources and official links

GOV.UK: Lorry and bus driver fees

GOV.UK: Apply for a provisional lorry or bus licence

GOV.UK: Become a lorry or bus driver

GOV.UK: Driver CPC training

About the author
Written by Mark Dent from official GOV.UK guidance, UK legislation and public reporting.
