After 12 months (eight with an approved course) you take a road test for G2, then a second for full G. This guide follows the Ministry of Transportation’s own handbook so you can tell what the province actually asks for, and what a site selling shortcuts is leaving out.

Step by step

Bring original documents. To apply you must show proof of legal name and date of birth. Documents must be original and valid. The handbook lists a passport, a Canadian citizenship card with photo, permanent resident documents and certain temporary immigration documents. If the main document lacks a full date of birth or the name differs, you may need a Canadian or US birth certificate, a marriage certificate, a change-of-name certificate or a court order. Direct identification by a parent or guardian is not acceptable.

Go to a DriveTest Centre (or a Travel Point where there is no regional centre). You pay the application fee and are asked health questions. Certain medical conditions can prevent licensing, and doctors and optometrists must report unsafe conditions.

Take the vision and knowledge tests. You must be at least 16.

Drive as a G1 holder. Rules include: blood-alcohol must be zero; you may not drive alone; the accompanying driver must hold a Class G or higher licence, have at least four years of experience and a blood-alcohol level under .05%; each person needs a seatbelt; no driving on 400-series highways with a posted limit over 80 km/h or on several named high-speed roads; no driving between midnight and 5 a.m.

Book the first road test. You must prepay the fee to schedule it. Passing it gives you a Class G2.

Pass the second road test for full Class G privileges.

What the official process costs and takes

Item

Official figure

Source

Original licence (G1, G2, G)

$90, includes knowledge test, first road test, five-year licensing fee

Ontario fees page and handbook

Second road test and retests

Additional charges

Handbook (amount not stated there)

Replace a licence

$35.75

Ontario fees page

Renew a licence

$90

Ontario fees page

Reinstate a suspended licence

$281 (additional penalties may apply)

Ontario fees page

Time from first test to full G

At least 20 months

Handbook

Fees are subject to change and the province posts changes on its fees page; we checked it on 5 October 2026.

If you already hold a licence

If you have just become an Ontario resident, you have 60 days to keep using your existing licence and apply for an Ontario one.

If you hold an Ontario Photo Card and apply for a driver’s licence, you give up the Photo Card, because you cannot hold both.

A visitor must be at least 16, hold a valid licence from home and, if staying more than three months, carry an international driving permit from their own country. Visitors are not eligible for an Ontario licence.

As of May 11, 2026, when you apply for a class G or class M licence you must declare that Ontario is your primary place of residence and that your presence in Canada is legal.

Lost licence

Replacing a lost licence is a paid ServiceOntario service ($35.75). Do not pay a website that is not ontario.ca, and do not answer a text about a licence suspension or renewal; the OPP and the North Bay Police Service have both warned about those. You can also reach ServiceOntario by phone at 416-235-2999 or 1-800-387-3445, the numbers printed in the handbook.

Why no shortcut exists

Look at the steps above. Identity is checked in person on original documents. Two road tests stand between a new driver and a full licence. A person offering “a licence without the test” is offering something the province itself will not issue; our pillar page covers what the law says about buying one.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

How old do you have to be to get a G1 in Ontario?

At least 16.
