She falsely claimed to be a registered nurse and misrepresented herself to medical practitioners and a pharmacist so she could access prescription medications, and offered IV infusions, supplements and other treatments claiming to balance vitamins and hormones. At Southport Magistrates’ Court she was convicted of two counts of holding herself out as a registered nurse in breach of the National Law. She was convicted with no additional punishment because of a concurrent District Court sentence for related offences, three counts of fraud.

The lesson in this case is where the lie travelled: not only to patients but to doctors and a pharmacist, who relied on the claim to hand over access.

Case two: the forged degree certificate, 2025

The Medical Board of Australia reported on 5 February 2025 that Amosa Talau Taulaga, also known as Amos Taulaga, falsely claimed to be a registered nurse though he had never completed his nursing degree or obtained registration. He applied for a nursing position at an alcohol and drug rehabilitation organisation and submitted a forged university nursing degree certificate. His CV contained multiple false claims, including a nursing fellowship, clinical placements and becoming a graduate registered nurse. He was hired on these misrepresentations but resigned after the employer found he was not on the register.

On 4 February 2025 he pleaded guilty to two counts of using a title to falsely indicate he was a health practitioner, one count of claiming to be qualified to practise nursing and one count of holding out as a health practitioner while unregistered. Magistrate Vincenzo Caltabiano convicted him and imposed a fine of $4,000, calling the offences serious and involving a breach of trust and a degree of planning. Ahpra brought the prosecution.

This is the document fraud the project is about: a forged paper certificate presented to an employer. It was caught by the register, not by examining the paper.

What the cases have in common

Question

Answer from the cases

Who prosecuted?

Ahpra, the national regulator

What was the offence?

Holding out or using a title as a registered health practitioner without registration, under the National Law

What was the penalty?

Convicted with no further punishment (2023, concurrent sentence); $4,000 fine (2025). Read how to check the Ahpra register for the steps and the one trap with names. If you are an employer, a certificate on paper is not proof: check the register for current registration. We have not verified a process by which employers confirm a degree with a university, so we do not describe one.

If you think someone is holding themselves out as a nurse without registration, Ahpra is the body to tell; its register page lists a phone number for questions, 1300 419 495, and publishes public statements and warnings about practitioners.

What employers can learn

In the 2025 case the application contained a forged degree certificate and a CV full of false claims, and the employer hired the applicant. The prompt for discovery was the register. An employer’s routine can be as simple as that: before an offer, search the register, match name and number, and read the conditions. The 2023 case adds a second lesson for pharmacists and doctors, who were the audience for the false claim: a person asking you to supply prescription medications because they are “a nurse” can be checked on the same register in a minute.

Frequently asked questions

<details>

Are there fake nurses in Australia?

Yes, in documented prosecutions.
